Paladin Ghost Trilogy XXI: Dumbarton 21 Year Old Moscatel Cask, 60.4% ABV
Description: The final entry in Paladin’s trilogy, with a finish in Moscatel.
Nose: It’s an extremely perfumed and aromatic nose. Parma violets, Turkish Delight, and jasmine. There’s a little extra herbal depth from a smidge of eucalyptus and some orange peel citrus.
Taste: The extreme aromas dialled right down now and give way to BBQ corn, chocolate mousse and cinnamon. Additional sweetness is reminiscent of brown sugar and honey. The overall mouthfeel is cakey, though. The perfumed riot on the nose comes through in much softer form on the finish.
Overall: This experiment works better than the last one for me. 7

Paladin Ghost Trilogy XXI: Dumbarton 21 Year Old Sauternes Cask, 59.3% ABV
Description: This indie bottler has been taking casks of aged grain whisky from the closed Dumbarton distillery and re-racking them in unusual casks for secondary maturation. This one features a Sauternes wine finish.
Nose: The nose is extremely interesting, but unbalanced. The typical aromas of grain whisky, such as coconut, custard, and buttery pastry are here but are quickly overwhelmed by big wax aromas, like play-doh, or raw clay. There’s some savory notes that sneak in such chorizo and sundried tomatoes but they are also beaten back by the waxiness.
Taste: In my opinion it spent too long in the Sauternes cask. If you like Sauternes this isn’t necessarily a bad thing but the wax and wine gums dominate too much, with a little support from elderflower, grapes and basil.
Overall: One for Sauternes lovers, but possibly too unbalanced for others.6.5

Paladin Ghost Trilogy 21 Year Old Dumbarton, 59.1% ABV
Description: A curious bottling from whisky investment company Paladin, this is a rare chance to try a single grain from a Lowland giant. Dumbarton was founded in the 1930s and produced whisky in enormous quantities for blends. This single cask was re-racked in a Marsala wine barrel for 6 months and bottled at cask strength.
Nose: Leather & lime initially, surrounded by mustiness, rich oak notes, and a hint of some of the more tropical fruits one would associate with an older whisky.
Taste: The large punchy hit of alcohol that comes with a grain whisky is quickly subdued, giving way to white pepper and more rich oak that was present on the nose. The tropical fruit is dipped in cream, and the marsala contributes a pleasant syrupy touch.
Overall: A very interesting chance to try something very unusual. The Marsala finish gives this whisky something that was almost certainly never originally envisaged for it when originally distilled. 8

Paladin Croftengea 14 Year Old, $200, 46% ABV
Description: Croftengea is actually the peated whisky produced by the Loch Lomond distillery. This limited indie bottling from new bottler Paladin was finished in an ex-Oloroso sherry cask.
Nose: A crayola-style waxiness opens up to pears, teriyaki sauce, and a slight hint of leather. The peat smoke here is light but ashy.
Taste: Moreish. The leather sticks around. The wax dies down and makes way for baked apples, stewed plums, mocha, and the ashy smoke continues to give a nice little kick.
Overall: The smoke compliments the overall profile nicely. 7.5
